Columbus, OH. – The Regional Tournament Semifinal game pitted #2 seed Michigan against #3 seed Ohio State, and it was a battle of two halves. The first half was dominated by the Buckeyes, and the second half by the Wolverines. It was a hard fought game between the two to determine which team in the tournament would be the first to advance to the Regional Final’s game.
As has happened with many games this season, junior Julianne Patterson (Rochester, NY/Victor) scored the first goal of the game, this time with a free position conversion. However, that slim lead that Patterson afforded the Wolverines did not last as the Buckeyes evened the score with a free position of their own.
It was a hard fought and intense game as both teams played well on offense and defense. However, the Buckeyes turned up their attack and started stunting the effort of the Wolverines. After the Buckeyes took a 3-1 lead, the Michigan coaches took a timeout to gather the team and try to develop a strategy to get the team back into the game. However, they were unable to do so, and Ohio State took a 7-1 lead into the half.
Throughout the first 15 minutes of the second half, Michigan’s struggles continued. Since the 26:30 minute mark in the first half, through the first 15 of the second, the Wolverines went scoreless. Freshman Goalie Sydney Franko (Farmington, MI/ST. Mary’s Academy (CO)) displayed a great effort in goal to keep Michigan in the game.
Michigan was able to finally string together a few goals to cut OSU’s lead, 7-4. This forced the Buckeyes to take a timeout and recompose themselves before they let the game slip away. It seemed to work as they scored after their timeout to take an 8-4 lead with under 10 minutes left in the game.
However, Michigan was determined to put forth their best effort to spoil the Buckeye’s dreams of making the Finals on their home field. The Wolverine’s ate away at Ohio State’s lead to bring the score within one, at 8-7. With just under three minutes left, Michigan was hoping to make a complete comeback and walk off the field victors. However, Michigan was unable to convert on their opportunities, and Ohio State was able to hold the ball for the last 1:30 to fend off the Wolverines and advance to the Final round of the Regional Tournament.
Michigan’s hopes of making it to Nationals now hang in the balance, as they wait to see if they get an At-Large bid.
